One Year of Pound the Puss

Posted by OrangePylon - August 25th, 2017

It's now been a full year since I released Pound the Puss to the Newgrounds Game Portal, and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you guys for a great experience.

I made Pound to amuse myself over a summer; I figured maybe a couple thousand people would play it at best. Almost 150,000 plays and an onslaught of overwhelmingly heartwarming reviews later, I find myself struck by how such a crude game garnered such a warm response from people.

It's been a year, but the game still feels fresh to me. Thanks to Newgrounds' support for the game, it saw its way into the "Best Games This Year" section, resting at #2 for a good while. Because of this, I saw new reviews almost every day, and was constantly reminded how my unfortunate little puss protagonist brightened someone's day. It really helped me through harder times while working on my other projects. Now a year's passed, and it's cleared a spot for another fortunate game... So, as traction on my puss dies down a bit, I thought I'd leave this post here to say thanks.

Although I'll be hard at work on Abomi Nation for a good while, I'll never forget my dirty little roots at Newgrounds. This has been an incredible year for me, and I can't stress enough how the reception to Pound the Puss has really lifted my spirits. Thank you to all the voters, reviewers, and let's players that helped me have more faith in my original work.

Who knows? Maybe Pound will show his face again someday.

In the mean time, keep poundin' that puss, Newgrounds.

-Carl

Thanks for sharing PtP on NG! I enjoy retrospective blog posts like this. Hope everything goes great with Abomi Nation!

Thanks, Tom! You're a real champ and Newgrounds has been a big inspiration to me for about a decade. Definitely wouldn't be where I am today without it!

Just played through it for the first time the other day, congrats on it's success! I wish I had eaten the omelette for myself, hahaha

Thanks for the support, dude! Glad you liked it.

I just played Pound The Puss yesterday and found it really amusing and well made.

Congrats on the success of it!

Thanks! Glad it's still making people smile. :)

I can not wait for the inevitable sequel

As long as there's a demand for it, I'd love to get to it some day. Pound's obviously really close to my heart, so I'd love to find a way to bring it back somehow.

I'm sure you can think of something

I have ideas; it's just the practicality of taking the time off to make it. Pound 1 was made at a really convenient time. I'd like to just keep pounding these things out, but the reality is that I can't support myself just doing Pound the Puss. Hopefully I can get some kind of comfortable funding so I can make crazy, fun stuff like Pound again.

Try Patreon or Kickstarter!

Realistically, even if I did gather a lot of support, the effort it would take to make this game would require a lot of time off, and if I were to charge for it, I doubt I'd charge more than a few bucks. I would need an unrealistic amount of donors to raise what I needed. It just isn't a profitable concept -- it's purely a passion project. Maybe once I'm more financially secure I can afford to divulge in Pound's world again, but right now it's just an issue of needing to focus on other projects first. I wish it weren't the case, but at least now I can try my hand at making my dream game with Abomi Nation.

I'm really thrilled you and so many others are into the idea of a sequel, but now isn't a time where I can see it happening... But who knows about the future!

Pound the Puss was worth some great laughs! Fingers crossed that some day we get to revisit that absurd little world :)

That's cool to know that you're working on Abomi Nation! I had heard about the project a while back, but had no idea you were involved. Best of luck to you, I look forward to checking that one out as well!

That's cool that you heard about Abomi Nation without even knowing it was me! Thanks for the feature on TWoNG all those months ago; it really made me feel like a big-shot at the time. :)

Question, why does it say canceled on the Abomi Nation kickstarter page. I am really interested in this game and would hate to see it not reach fruition.

The Kickstarter was cancelled, but not the game! I didn't realize cancelling funding would do that to the campaign page, haha. Production on Abomi Nation is still chugging along. I'm so glad you're interested!

Pound the Puss is honestly the classiest crude game ever. idk it was great and I keep thinking about its perfect humor

That's so genuinely sweet of you; thanks so much! :)
